January 22nd, 2010 - The Beginning

Judging by the title of this blog post, it appears I am 21 days late on a possible New Year's Resolution to start a blog/diary. I'll blame this on time spent trying to figure out the best format for it and approach to take to it. Really, I should probably blame those 3 weeks on my wonderful son - the primary reason for this blog to begin with. His name is Benjamin, and he consumes most of my time when I'm at home - which is fine withe me. He also consumes my time when I'm at work - I'm thinking about him and trying to work faster so I can come home and help my loving wife, Katie, with him.
I've wanted to start a record of these times with Ben. I may not be able to update everyday - that's okay I think. I would like to be able to easily come back and see what I was thinking about him at these times - he is changing so fast right now it is unbelievable. I'll also be able to post about other interesting things going on in my life - though there is not time for much else right now. One warning - I may try to inject science into this blog from time-to-time, hence the name of it. It is an homage to the work I try to do every day and how it influences who I am at home. I may also include posts about a board game I'm playing with my brother and cousin over email to make it easier for them to access pictures of the board.

I'll leave this first post with a few verses I have composed for Ben's baptismal service, which is set to be on January 31st. They are set to the tune of "Tell Your Children", a favorite hymn of ours which will be featured at the service:

Benjamin, we make this promise,
You will always have our love,
Just as God cares for His people,
Our example from above

(Chorus - same as song)
Parents, tell your children,
Age to age the same,
Glorify the living Lord above,
Magnify His holy Name, magnify His holy Name

As you grow, we'll watch in wonder,
You are an amazing gift.
Smiling faces, loving laughter
All around you to uplift,

Parents, tell your children,
Age to age the same,
Glorify the living Lord above,
Magnify His holy Name, magnify His holy Name

My memory of Ben for today will be of this morning, when I was trying to get him to go back to sleep (I took first morning shift, which started around 6:15 AM or so). Instead, we ended up playing a bit, and I was singing this song to him. Occasionally, without warning, I would lean down and nibble his shoulder or neck and he would break out into the biggest smile and laugh really loud. Needless to say, it was very hard to leave him as he was being so incredibly cute this morning. He definitely lifted me up as I came to the end of this hard week - the chemistry goes both ways.
